How did FreeCodeCamp start?
Building a Community that can Scale & Important tips for Programmers
This week, I've had the pleasure to host Quincy Larson, founder of FreeCodeCamp on my youtube channel Codezilla, and quite frankly, I couldn't have hoped for a better way to the start the last month of what has been an eventful year for the channel!
Together, we discussed a variety of important topics, such as building a community and scaling it while ensuring quality, giving clear guidance for beginners on how to start their programming journey, the necessity of learning data structures and algorithms, and if one can start their software development career despite being above the age of 30!
We also went through Quincy's journey from journalism, teaching, getting into software engineering and then finally starting FreeCodeCamp. We delved into the project and discussed the inspiration to start FreeCodeCamp, the key challenges, and if FreeCodeCamp was Quincy’s first ever project?
In addition, we answered a range of questions like:
- Why is FreeCodeCamp FREE?
- What it takes to keep FreeCodeCamp running?
- How was the FreeCodeCamp front-end curriculum built?
- How do people learn?
- When is the best time to start applying for jobs?
- What learners love most about FreeCodeCamp?
- Is it necessary to have a degree?
- How many people have landed jobs after going through FreeCodeCamp?
We also talked about the release date of the new Data Science curriculum and the nine new certifications that are going to be added.
I might have missed a detail or two here, so I highly encourage you to watch the video which contains Arabic subtitles, and please make sure to follow me on Twitter, to be updated with all the content that I release!
